Family history is a very important risk factor for cancer. Scientists have discovered that inherited genes play a major role in many types of cancer. There are certain genes that are known to be associated with an increased risk of developing a variety of cancers, including common cancers such as breast, colorectal, ovarian, and prostate, as well as other types of cancers. It is now possible for patients to have their genes analyzed to learn whether or not someone carries a type of a gene that is associated with more cancer risk. Genetic information may help an individual and his or her physician take special steps to detect cancer early or prevent it altogether.
The Cancer Family Syndrome is very similar to a family tree, but you check off those family members who have or had cancer in their lifetime. Once you fill out the form to the best of your ability, you will need to follow the mathematical equation to see the probability of you having cancer at some point in your lifetime.
